WHAT IS A RELAXER?

A relaxer is the opposite of a perm (curls straight hair). It is a chemical treatment designed to rearrange the structure of curly hair into a straighter or smoother form.
Most relaxers have a pH over 13 and can swell the hair up to two times its normal diameter. They have the active ingredient hydroxide ion which makes them extremely high in alkaline and can literally melt the hair if used incorrectly, which is why they should only be done by a professional.
